Sepia Saturday - 08 July 2017

My interpretation for this week's prompt . . .

A day of leisure

My paternal grandparents with family and friends
at McConnell's Mill.
They certainly did get 'gussied' up for an afternoon outing.

This mill has attracted tourists from near and far for generations.
It is located along Slippery Rock Creek
in a deep gorge created in the Ice Age
with swift white water, boulders and large trees.

Be sure to join Sepia Saturday 'here'

  1. I have those picnics with everybody gussied up too. Perhaps not so much as these lounging ladies though. And to think they got up and down gracefully... or did they need to be pulled up.

  2. You don't often see such informal photographs from that era, especially featuring women. The skirt of the woman in the left looks to be made of very heavy material. The mill is in a lovely leafy spot, and I love the name Slippery Rock Creek - it conjures up such a picture.

    1. something about a Capt. Brady, a war hero of the 1800s slipping on a rock while crossing. Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment.

  3. Just looking at that last picture of Slippery Rock Creek made me feel 10 degrees cooler which is a good thing seeing as how the temp outside is currently reading 100 degrees! I have several photographs of my husband's grandparents all dressed up at picnics or on the beach. Was the thing to do, I guess.

  4. Those women must have had a heck of a set of hat pins to hold those huge hats in place. Oh the stream at the mill looks beautiful.

  5. What a great photo, the ladies looking lovely and leisurely, after they had cooked the picnic lunches, usually some chicken, and maybe potato salad (boiled potatoes and maybe hard boiled eggs with steam too) or perhaps they had cooks, so could look cool and comfortable. I love the mill shot and it looks like a covered bridge over the stream!

  6. It looks like a beautiful and interesting spot to visit. The ladies must have been uncomfortable but accepted it as normal. Their hats are huge!

  7. Oh, where is this? I see a covered bridge.

The photo is lovely. I always think of how the women had to get around with so much clothing on doing something simple like just sitting on the ground. Layers to deal with.

  8. The photo is splendid. It does seem strange to get so dressed to sit around outdoors.
